What IQ percentiles mean

An IQ percentile tells you the percentage of people in a comparison group who scored lower than a given IQ score. For example, a score near the 84th percentile means about 84 out of 100 people would be expected to score lower.

Most modern IQ-style scales place the average at 100 with a standard deviation of 15. Under that model, each 15-point move is one standard deviation from the mean: 85 is one standard deviation below average, while 115 is one standard deviation above average.
